The Young Nigerian Engineer
The life of a young Nigerian Engineer starts from the secondary school. He first needs to learn basic sciences from the junior secondary school or technical school, but the problem here in Nigeria is that, there is usually no one to guide and direct us the young engineers so that we can even know what exactly we need to know and do as an aspiring engineer. I wish to bridge that gap someday anyway. In essence, after that young man has finished his secondary school education, if he finished from a techinical school with good grades, he his qualified to be addressed as a technician. Come to think of it, i doubt if there is any organized body that is recognaized by the government that registers and regulates the practise of technicians and craftmen oh, i stand to be corrected on this sha. Well, lets call the young engineer Kalu. So, am saying Kalu would need to seek admission into the university to study and engineering course, of course, the course must be accreditted by the Nigerian University Commission. In Nigeria, an Engineer is trained for five (5) years. The first year is study of basic sciences, the next year to the third is introduction to basic engineering and CIWES, the fourth year is the industrial attachment (IT), the final year is specialisation and project work, afterwards, graduation and convocation. However, Kalu is not yet and Engineer oh, he would have only become a graduate engineer. We would discuss what else kalu needs to do in the next post.
